On Tuesday, Tom Brady – considered the greatest football quarterback of all time – announced his retirement from the NFL. Brady has won seven Lombardi Trophy trophies in his over two decades as a professional football player. It is the record for most consecutive championships by any single player. He was also named Super Bowl MVP.

“I have always believed the sport of football is an ‘all-in’ proposition — if a 100% competitive commitment isn’t there, you won’t succeed, and success is what I love so much about our game,” Brady said in his statement on Instagram. Every day presents a new challenge that allows me to reach my full potential. These 22 years have been a challenge, and I have done my best.

According to ESPN sources, Brady was determined for weeks not to have a “farewell” season. He led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers win a Super Bowl title and NFC South crown last season. Brady declared his retirement on Tuesday less than one week after the Buccaneers had been eliminated from Super Bowl contention due to a defeat by the Los Angeles Rams.

Brady has received a lot of praise via social media.

Memories to last a life time. Thanks, 12,” tweeted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday.
